Two steps forward, one step back
If you were going for a 6-mile run, but you took 2 steps forward, then 1 step back, you’d have to run 9 miles to finish the original distance. 50% more. Right?
Wrong. Think of it this way, if you ran the whole 6 miles forwards (that’s 2 steps forward), then “1 step back” you would have to run 3 miles back again, then you would have to run the second half again to get to the finish, so that is 6+3+3 = 12 miles. 100% more! Double!
BUT, if you really ran 2 steps forward, then 1 step back, all the way, all those little “switchbacks” compound on one another.
Look at the picture…you go 2 “steps” (little upright bars in this picture) forward, then back a bar, then forward 2, then back a bar. If you just ran in a straight line, this run (20 steps) would be over in 20 steps, but by going 2 steps forward and 1 step back, it takes a staggering 56 steps in total to run the whole 20-step distance!!!
Can you see that?
So it would take 56 miles to run a 20 mile race! That’s a massive 280% more total running!!!
NOW pay attention – this is the important bit, this is what this post is about: – 2 steps forward and 1 step back – this is what people do with their LIVES.
I meet people every day, that want to lose weight, they tell me that they are “good” Monday through til Friday afternoon (2 steps forward), then they “party” from 5 or 6 pm on Friday til they go to bed on Sunday night (1 step back).
NOW do you see why I was going at the maths lesson and my funny little Excel table?
People do this with DIET…EXERCISE…CAREER…SAVINGS…
RELATIONSHIPS…all these important areas of our lives, people are doing this to themselves.
If you want to lose weight and change your body shape forever, try being “good” for 7 days per week UNTIL you reach your goal! Magic formula!!!
Want to save for that holiday or new car or to pay a chunk of your mortgage? Don’t just save Monday-to-Friday then blow your cash at the weekend, save 7 days per week for a year and you’ll get what you want!
2 steps forward and 1 step back is a KILLER! I KNOW, I did it for YEARS. I would “diet” for 5 days, then pig out for 2, justifying my behaviour as “Well I’ve been good all week, I deserve a treat, I ate like a bloody Monk since Monday” and then at the weekend, I would undo most of the good that I had done during the week.
IMAGINE my goal was to lose 20 pounds – I had to lose 56 in order to get there!!! And let’s not even talk about how every time you yo-yo weight then your body composition changes, losing muscle not fat, making the fat loss even harder next time!
So this mathematical example may not make a very exciting visual image, but can you see how MASSIVE this is?
MND is the answer to this yo-yo diet bullshit, this fad diet mentality that causes everyone to take 56 steps forward to achieve just 20 steps gained. It’s a long term, achievable, sustainable way to live – just eat REAL whole food, plants and animals, and exercise every day. Quit the booze, the sugar, the bulky starchy carbs, anything processed and packaged, drink plenty of water and get plenty of fresh air. It’s 2 steps forward EVERY DAY and no need to take any steps back.
Just give up this crazy “fad diet” mentality and get on the right track – 2 steps forward every day, and you will accelerate towards your desired goals in life SO MUCH FASTER once you stop taking the 1 step back.
