Avoiding injuries, training and eating ‘caveman style’
One year ago this day, I fractured my spine in two places falling 6 foot onto a concrete floor while training.
To be honest, I have a very high pain threshold, but that accident did hurt quite a lot. Especially after 24 hours, then it really kicked in and for a week or so all movement was very painful and very difficult and very limited.
I guess there is a certain amount of potential danger involved in the way I train. I climb rocks and trees, dangle from branches and bars, jump over things and run over uneven grass and mud. I have suffered a number of injuries, such as twisted ankles, stress fracture in my tibia, shin splints, fractured rib, several fractured fingers and toes, a couple of muscle sprains, compressed disc in my back, muscle spasms and the obvious trashed knee (from running, I had surgery last year) and a variety of cuts and scratches.
Life can be dangerous
There is inherent danger in using your body, I run, climb, jump, lift and practice martial arts, injuries are part of the game.
However, I want my body to last many years, so I want to reduce my injury rate in the future. Part of my training must include a more intelligent approach to exercise. Caveman would have been far more cautious and aware of his physical environment, he would have had much greater sensitivity to the land, to help him avoid injuries. When I fractured my spine, there was a hospital to turn to, but for caveman, it would have meant he was on his own, alone, unable to hunt, gather, skin animals, cook, build shelter or defend himself and his family/tribe.
Caveman would have known that chasing an animal in long grass was potentially very hazardous, because one rock or tree root at speed could mean a broken ankle. He would have considered such hazards carefully. In spring and summer, when the grass is long and thick, when birds eggs are in the nest and fruit is growing on the trees, and vegetables are widely available, caveman often would have chosen to steal eggs and gather fruits and vegetables in preference to hunting for meat. Why risk animal bites, cuts, falls…all the hazards of the chase and the fight, when easier food options were available?
On the flip side, in winter time, in cold climates, there would have been little available on the trees and under the ground, so hunting for meat would have been caveman’s only choice. At this time of year, when only meat is available, the grass is lower and the ground slightly less hazardous for the chase.
Learning to read Mother Nature’s clues
In this way, I use Mother Nature to give us clues as to what she thinks we should eat at different times of the year and in different geographical regions.
Everything in the natural world is there for a reason, every eco-system is complete, everything has a purpose. Mother Nature provides the right foods to complete the food-chain in any given eco-system. So I try to look at Mother Nature and read the landscape and the environment for clues as to what we should eat. In winter, here in Northern Europe, I believe we should mainly eat meat and hardy winter vegetables, in summer, much more fruit, veg, salad, eggs, etc.
It is a simple, natural way to read the land, the weather, the location, and adapt accordingly. It’s the MotherNaturesDiet way.
So no crazy dangerous training for me today!
I’ll try an easy workout today, just for a change!
