Rant – the straight facts
I don’t like to use my blog to rant, but sometimes I feel the need, and it is, after all, MY blog. If I rant and no one comes here anymore to read it, then I learn something. If I rant and lots of people come and read it, then you learn something. Either way, it’s progress.
I never rant at any individual personally, but some days I get wound up, people say things to me and no matter how much I try to help, they just don’t seem to listen to common sense. So I feel like ranting today.
I’ve been writing this blog for over half a year now. I’ve been learning about health and nutrition and healthy eating for many years. I spent 20 years being mostly unhealthy. I spent almost a decade trying to get things right, but failing. I have finally spent the last 7 years getting it right. I went from 20 years as an over-weight smoker, a BMI that said I was obese, years of pretty heavy drinking, to a lean, slim, healthy, marathon running fitness freak.

So while I may not be a qualified doctor, or dietician or nutritionist, I am qualified in life. I went from fat to fit, I went from 20 years of smoking and being overweight, to being a lean, fit, marathon running health freak. I figured it all out, through trial and error, and a lot of reading.
Here is what I have learned:
- Eat clean and healthy. Naturally raised organic meat and fish, organic vegetables, a little fruit, some nuts, a few seeds.
- Avoid all the crap and poisons: alcohol, nicotine, sugar, chocolate, cake, sweets, caffeine, drugs, pills, additives, e-numbers, preservatives, etc.
- Get up, move your body. Exercise, Play some sports. Go for a long walk. Ride your bike, Swim. Lift a few weights. Move your body. Use your body. Stretch.
- Drink lots, mostly water.
- Sleep and rest as much as a busy, full, modern life allows you to.
- Get out, often, enjoy fresh air, sunshine, rain, wind, all of it.
That’s it. You don’t need to know much more than that.
Food isn’t a game, a hobby, a pastime. The food you eat should not become a leisure activity in and of itself.
Food keeps you alive. It is fuel.
Eat to fuel your life, not just to fill your time.
You have to move, you have to exercise, you have to use your muscles and your heart and your lungs.
Healthy eating alone is not enough, you must exercise.
Exercise alone is not enough, you must eat healthily.
These are the rules to being healthy and living a long healthy life.
So far I have written over 70,000 words on this blog. I could write another 70,000, but I don’t really need to, as this is all you really need to know.
So many people seem so resistant to these simple facts.
The degree to which you deviate from these simple principles, will determine the state of your health.
I think a lot of people are living ‘in denial’ at a sub-conscious level. They are hoping that someone is going to announce a new ‘diet’ that says you can get healthy by drinking beer, smoking fags and eating burgers and cake. I think that was why Atkins diet was so popular, because it gave people permission to eat all manner of sinful foods.
I make no such promises.
You have to set your priorities
I promised to write a blog, my notes about my personal experience, my own learning from my journey. This is it. I don’t really care whether you, whoever may be reading this, LIKE my blog or not. I didn’t say I was going to write a blog to make new friends or get people to like me. I am writing this to share what I have learned in my quest for supreme good health. I want to share this with other people, free of charge, because I am a good person, and I believe in using my time to share this knowledge because it breaks my heart to see so many people in such poor physical condition.
Obesity is an epidemic. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, all destroying human life in epidemic proportions. I believe that a clean diet and a healthy lifestyle can arrest and reverse these trends. That is why, despite my ridiculous and tiring, busy life, I take the time to share these lessons and the things I am learning, with anyone who wants to come on here and read this and learn.
If I write this in my spare time and it helps even one person to lose weight and regain their health, then my time has been well spent.
Many people seem disinterested in the truth. Here is the truth:
- EAT CLEAN
People don’t always seem mad keen to read this simple truth. Some people criticise my ‘boring’ advice.
I am real sorry to those of you who find that advice boring, not very sexy, dull, un-trendy, un-cool and un-interesting. I am real sorry that you are so drugged-up on the multi-media frenzy that is modern living that you do not find the appeal in living a long healthy life, having heaps of energy, feeling proud at the sight of your own naked body and never feeling ill.
Feel free to ignore my advice, spark up a fag, pour another glass of wine, order a pizza and sit on your sofa and stare at your TV. Just don’t complain to me about it. This blog is not preaching, it’s sharing. I don’t judge anyone, it’s your life, do with it as you please, this page just shares with you a little bit of what I am doing with mine. If you are not interested, then go away and take your negativity with you.
If you ARE interested, then please understand that abundant good health is SIMPLE – just eat clean and work out. Every day of your life, for your whole life. We ALL deviate, we all slip up, we all cheat. But the degree and frequency will determine your results. If you can stick to these simple principles 90% of the time, you’ll achieve great success. If you only stick to it 20% of the time, you will fail. Only you can determine where you stand and how much your looks, your body, your health and your energy matter to you.
(Rant over…I went back and edited myself heavily and took all the swearing and all the really aggressive shouty-bits out!!)
